Thoughts on what's great about Modesto from Los Angeles visitors

I was sitting in our living room with Dr. Tammy Wu's brothers who live in Los Angeles, California. They thought Modesto was a nice place to visit and live because we have access to nice stores and services without the tremendous traffic. They love the fact that there is the convenience of having a Trader Joes, Costco, and an Apple Store. These things were important to them as visitors.

This led me to do a search on Wikipedia on how many Apple stores there were in the world. There are 363 stores in the world as of June 2012.

As for rare finds in this world - What's good about Modesto, CA.

Somehow this led me to do a search on how many women plastic surgeons there were in the United States

So, I had to add that Modesto has a woman plastic surgeon (1 of 668 women Plastic Surgeons in the US as of May 2012).

I decided to ask that question to our friends on social media, and we came up with this initial list of what makes Modesto a great place to live.

We are just 2 hours away from everything, centrally located, "Modesto is on your way to everywhere" (Sunset Magazine)
Cost of living is reasonable in comparison
Because it's close enough to San Francisco and the weather is beautiful
Farmer's markets, flower farms, almond orchards
Gallo Center for the Arts
A new theater - Center Stage Conservatory Lower Level Studio
Birthplace of many nice folks

Some answers were not as enthusiastic or some were funny such as :

Nothing great
At least we're not Stockton (not sure entirely what this means - I haven't spent much time in Stockton)
Doesn't hold a candle to San Diego - no beaches, padres, chargers, sea world, zoo, balboa park.
Modesto can be seen as the armpit of Modesto
Flat

I had to reply to my San Diego friend (who made the previous three points) that "I had turned down a job offer in San Diego to take my first surgery job in Modesto, CA." Interestingly that's where I met this San Diego friend - at my first job in Modesto. She had moved away to San Diego. I guess I've been known to make "strange" decisions (such as San Diego vs. Modesto). But we do like it here in Modesto. After the first surgery job went away in 2006. We continued on in Modesto as a choice to stay in Modesto. We feel that Modesto is a great place to be a doctor.

Where is Modesto, California?

Modesto is located within Stanislaus County in the Central Valley of California. Our neighboring county to the North is San Joaquin County. To the South is Merced County, and to the West is Alameda County, Santa Clara County, and Contra Costa County.

North: San Joaquin County
South: Merced County
West: Alameda, Santa Clara, and Contra Costa Counties

The Central Valley is a large, flat valley that dominates the central portion of California. It is primarily agricultural. It is bounded by the Cascade Range in the north, the Sierra Nevada to the east, the Tehachapi Mountains to the south, and the Coast Ranges and San Francisco Bay to the west.

Attractions near Modesto:

It is 110 miles from Yosemite National Park, 80 miles from Sacramento, 90 miles from San Jose and San Francisco. It is two hours away from Monterey and Carmel. It is also about two hours away from Lake Tahoe.

The Modesto city has a total area of 93.1 square Km. (36.0 square miles). 2000 census shows a Modesto population of 188,856 people. The Modesto median age is 33 years old.
