a serious infection of the floor of the mouth"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Ludwig&#8217;s Angina &#8211; a cellulitis of the face and mouth<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>usually occurring in adults<\/li>\n<li>May obstruct airways<\/li>\n<li>Might need a tracheotomy<\/li>\n<li>Can require surgical management and ICU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Ludwig&#8217;s Angina is also called:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Angina Ludovici<\/li>\n<li>Cellulitis of the floor of the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Angina Maligna<\/li>\n<li>Morbus Strangularis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>History of the name Ludwig&#8217;s Angina<\/h3>\n<p>Named after <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilhelm_Friedrich_von_Ludwig\">Wilhelm Friedrich von Ludwig<\/a> who is a German physician who first described this condition in 1836. \u00a0He died in 1865 of a unspecified neck infection.<\/p>\n<h3>Causes of Ludwig&#8217;s Angina<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Dental infections<\/li>\n<li>Infection of the gums<\/li>\n<li>Immunocompromised patients<\/li>\n<li>Tongue piercing<\/li>\n<li>Infections from other procedures on the face. \u00a0Side note, see my other webpage: \u00a0<a title=\"Botox and Juvederm injections in Modesto\" href=\"https:\/\/surgerytoday.com\/modesto-botox\/\">Botox and Juvederm injections in Modesto<\/a> &#8211; sterile technique is important. \u00a0Note: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.injectionartistry.com\">Botox and Dermal Fillers<\/a> have not had any reports of association with Ludwig&#8217;s Angina. \u00a0But infection prevention and knowledge is always on my mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Symptoms and signs of Ludwig&#8217;s Angina<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cellulitic facial infection (side note: <a title=\"facial peels in Modesto, CA\" href=\"https:\/\/surgerytoday.com\/modesto-plastic-surgery\/modesto-chemical-peels\/obagi-blue-peel.htm\">facial peels in Modesto, CA<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Bilateral lower facial swelling around the lower jaw and upper neck.<\/li>\n<li>Spread to involve submandibular, sublingual, and submental spaces of the face.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>There may be stridor or difficulty breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Can extend into the <strong>anterior mediastinum<\/strong> &#8211; with some patients presenting with chest pain.<\/li>\n<li>diverse in presentation ranging from enlargement of lymph nodes to necrotizing fasciitis.<\/li>\n<li>Tongue can be posteriorly displaced &#8211;
