YouTube vs. FaceBook Video Sound Quality

Piano as surgical dexterity practice

As part of my daily surgical dexterity practice, I play the piano.  But I also need feedback by self-assessing my technique by making videos.  Most importantly the sound created with my fingers, arms, and body is important.  I do load the videos up onto the internet at times to get feedback from others.  I would say that there are plenty of experts out there on the internet who know a lot more about piano playing than I do.  But part of my goals is to have my dexterity improve for my cosmetic surgical practice where I inject Botox, Fillers, Veins and I perform Acupuncture too.

Two social sharing platforms are FaceBook and YouTube.  I had to compare to see which one had better sound quality.  In the end I think the sound quality goes with the video quality.  YouTube won out in my opinion.  But both platforms do change the volume and degrade the quality of the original file which was taken as a quicktime move with a Canon 60D camera which I got from Costco about a year ago.

Head to head comparison: YouTube vs. FaceBook

My initial conclusions are that YouTube’s sound quality degrades less than FaceBook’s. YouTube has a tendency to lower my volume and FaceBook does the opposite – it raises the volume (when compared to the original quicktime file sitting on my hard-drive). Here’s the YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqCNMfsNBvQ

I don’t know if I can share the video from FaceBook, but this would be the link:

I guess you can decide for yourself.

I did the listening through a new beyerdynamic professional headphone.  It’s the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms.

The box got crushed in the delivery to me, but I think the headphones are fine.  This is how it arrived (there was an outside box that got beat up too).  The box was torn in several places, but I think miraculously the headphones were flexible enough to take some of the squishing that happened.

Yelp Filtered Review Secret – Maybe?

yelp

Help for Yelp Filtered Reviews

I just got started looking at Yelp about 2 weeks ago.  It got my attention because all of a sudden it started appearing on Google searches for the term “Botox Modesto” or “Modesto Botox“.  Then I searched other cities such as San Francisco – “San Francisco Botox” and the Yelp search comes up pretty much first.  What is this about?  Yelp is taking over the world I suppose.  So, I decided to consider taking it seriously.  I saw that I already had about 2-3 reviews, and some filtered reviews.  So, I decided to try to read about some of the filtered reviews and get people to write reviews to see what got filtered.  I even tried to write my own Yelp review – at least I wrote it with my name (Calvin L.) – didn’t do one of those undercover things and change my name.  Apparently you get filtered if you write your own review – fine – I understand the reasoning.

What I’ve read online about avoiding Yelp filtered reviews

So I looked at the characteristics of what got “filtered” by Yelp.  I think what others were saying were true:

Red flags that might get you filtered on Yelp:

  • Very few reviews.  Or only one review.
  • No picture on profile
  • No Yelp friends
  • Very few things filled out on the profile
  • Very few people voting your reviews as Useful, Funny or Cool.

Okay so those things make some sense – yelp want to filter out fake people – or people who don’t exist.

I found a new secret! – 5 star ratings habit

I found another pattern.

It seems like Yelp likes people who are stingy with 5 star reviews.  If you blasted someone with a 1 star, 2 star or perhaps gave 3 or 4 stars instead of the full 5, yelp values your reviews somewhat more than someone who frequently gives out all 5 stars.  Thus stingy reviewers get filtered less.

So do what you will with this pattern that I think I found.  Maybe we should be stingy with 5 star reviews on yelp.  Thus when we do give out 5 star reviews – they stick and don’t get filtered by the all mighty Yelp.

Conclusion about Yelp

One more thing to help avoid getting your reviews filtered – write some mediocre reviews too.  I think if you’re all 5 starsy, Yelp thinks you’re fake and thus might get filtered.   But please don’t bash people unnecessarily.  I personally prefer to give people all 5 stars and those that don’t deserve 5 stars, I’m kinda quiet.  So for now, Yelp has filtered every single one of my 7 reviews.  That’s too bad.  I really don’t like discussing my gripes in public, but I don’t own Yelp and Yelp doesn’t live in my house.  I thought Facebook was confusing.  Yelp’s confusing too.

Meanwhile, I’ll continue to edit my filtered review posts to see what else I find out about the world of filtered reviews in Yelp.

For now – the secret?  Be stingy with your Yelp stars.

Surgical Artistry FaceBook – Modesto Plastic Surgery

I tend to get wordy – scroll down to the bottom for the summary of the three worthy FaceBook pages related to Surgical Artistry in Modesto, CA.

How do I find the Surgical Artistry page on FaceBook?

This is confusing because somehow FaceBook has a page created for Surgical Artistry – but regardless of how I try to “edit” that page – it doesn’t take my “suggestion” for redirecting to a page we created – which we consider the “official” Surgical Artistry FaceBook Page.

The Official Surgical Artistry FaceBook Page

www.FaceBook.com/ModestoPlasticSurgery – I figured that Modesto Plastic Surgery described best what we did.  Looking at our services – there is more to Surgical Artistry than just Plastic Surgery.

Birth of a second Official Surgical Artistry FaceBook Page

However after a while, some of my patients thought I (Calvin Lee, MD) should have a page of my own relating to Botox, Juvederm, and other Dermal Fillers.  So we created:  www.FaceBook.com/BotoxModesto.  On this page we talk about things like cannulas for cosmetic injections, dermal fillers for lip augmentation, and perhaps even cosmetic acupuncture.  this page is more related to the stuff I do, but with a slant on cosmetic injections and dermal fillers.

Wait, there is yet another FaceBook page

Worth mentioning is my “personal” FB page – everyone is welcome to find me there.

The URL is www.FaceBook.com/Modesto – I like Modesto so much that yes, it has become my FaceBook vanity URL.

Summary of the three FaceBook pages:

  1. Surgical Artistry Modesto Plastic Surgery FaceBook – slant on plastic surgery
  2. Surgical Artistry Modesto Botox FaceBook – slant on Botox
  3. Calvin Lee Personal FaceBook – everything Modesto

Mobile Devices taking over Computer usage for FaceBook viewers

Is this the death of the computer?

Desktops and Laptop included in the funeral march?

I posted on FaceBook – asking my Modesto, CA friends and friends elsewhere:

Help me with this Poll: What device are you using right now on FaceBook (ie. Laptop, iPhone, iPad, whatever).

Mobile devices vs. Computer – the winner regarding FaceBook is:

A few hours later:

I got 47 responses.

77% Mobile Devices vs. 23% Computer when viewing FaceBook.

Of the Mobile devices, 70% of them were iPhones and 30% were non-iPhones.

I didn’t tally up the tablets:  iPad vs. non-iPad.

Just for the record:

I personally put myself down as Laptop user.

How is this computer vs mobile usage important to Cosmetic Surgeons?

For example if we’re going to advertise Botox, we should probably make sure those ads make it to the mobile devices.

Day 1 Vegas Cosmetic Surgery 2013

First official day of the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology Conference 2013

I particularly got a lot great ideas and info regarding Botox and Fillers (Juvederm).  I was very interested in the way they treated complications.

I also attended sessions that talked about social media, habits of very successful cosmetic practices, blogging, reviews, thank you notes, patient surveys, and the usage of YouTube videos.  I hope to act on much of this.  It was almost info overload.  And this was only day 1.

Plastic Surgery Related Booths we visited

  • Operative headlamp company – about $800 for a head lamp.  3 hour-4 hour battery life. LED bulb!
  • Zein Obagi.  Looked at the differences between Zein Obagi and Obagi
  • Touch MD – incredible stuff indeed.  Touch MD is a technological way to visually share the plastic surgical consultation with the patient.  There’s a program component which resides on the computer and then there’s a “cloud” component where the data resides.  The data can be accessed from many other devices and webpages via secure methods.  This is a great addition to EMR.  And perhaps would be a great addition to our plastic surgical practice in Modesto, CA.  They said that currently they don’t have any doctors in Modesto, CA who have Touch MD.  It also has a back end for picture management.

We were originally going to see a show, but instead we talked with the guys at Touch MD.

TiZO3 and Lip Balm

We found an an amazing Sun Screen for the lips.  It is made by the Fallene company in their Solar Protection Formula line.  TIZO is among one of their products.  Dr. Tammy Wu said that she has been looking for a lip balm that is a physical / mineral based for awhile.  We just found the LipTect product at the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery conference.  Along with this, we also found the  TiZO3 sunscreen for the face.  It has Titanium, Iron, and Zinc.  It is Paraben, Oil, PABA and fragrance free.  It is also tinted and is a very water resistant formula.  We will have the LipTect (Lip balm) and TiZO3 sunscreen available for purchase at Surgical Artistry, Modesto, CA.  Dr. Calvin Lee (me) takes credit for introducing Dr. Tammy Wu to the booth, and Dr. Wu made the decision to make an opening order!  One more reason for this – it would be an great product to protect a lip augmentation investment.
